Weil der Schulalltag unter der Fuchtel des Klassenfieslings Linus sich für Max eher unerfreulich gestaltet, flüchtet er sich in seine ganz persönliche Traumwelt. Hauptfiguren des in seinem Tagebuch festgehaltenen Fantasieuniversums sind der bei Haien aufgewachsene Shark Boy und das süße Lava Girl. Als Linus Max' Tagebuch in die Finger bekommt, geschehen plötzlich ungeheuerliche Dinge: Shark Boy und Lava Girl werden nämlich lebendig und rekrutieren Max zur Rettung ihres Heimatplaneten Drool.
