Der Privatdetektiv Philip Marlowe soll im Auftrag eines Ganoven die verschollene Velma finden und gerät dabei von einer lebensbedrohlichen Situation in die andere. Zeugen können nicht mehr aussagen, eine kostbare Kette spielt eine dubiose Rolle, Marlowe wird mit Drogen vollgepumpt und kommt neben einem Toten wieder zu sich.
