Matt und Christina Drayton, ein älteres und wohlhabendes Ehepaar, leben mit ihrer einzigen Tochter Joey in San Francisco. Ihr Glück scheint vollkommen, als sie von den Heiratsplänen Joeys erfahren. Der Auserwählte ist ein junger Arzt, den sie während eines Aufenthalts auf Hawaii kennengelernt hat. Matt und Christina sind gebildete, verständnisvolle und liberale Menschen. Dennoch wird ihre Freude über die geplante Hochzeit getrübt, als sie erfahren, dass der zukünftige Schwiegersohn ein Schwarzer ist.
