Der New Yorker Geschäftsmann David Aames stand bislang auf der Sonnenseite des Lebens. Eines Abends jedoch verliebt er sich in die bezaubernde Sofia. Doch seine langjährige Affäre Julie hat etwas dagegen. Nach einem heftigen Streit kommt es zu einem Autounfall, bei dem Julie stirbt und Davids Gesicht aufs Grausamste entstellt wird. Etliche Operationen später scheint Aames genesen, da läuft ihm Sofia erneut über den Weg, nur um kurz darauf spurlos zu verschwinden. Stattdessen taucht Julie wieder auf und behauptet felsenfest, sie sei Sofia...
