Eine Frau begeht Selbstmord aus unersichtlichen Grund. Detective Kathy Faber untersucht den Fall. In Rückblenden werden die lose miteinander verbundenen Geschichten von fünf Frauen erzählt. Ihr Weg wird immer wieder von der Frau gekreuzt, die später Selbstmord begeht. Da ist die Bankdirektorin Rebecca, die ein Verhältnis mit einem verheirateten Mann hat und schwanger wird. Da ist die geschiedene alleinerziehende Kinderbuchautorin Rose, die sich in einen Zwerg verliebt. Da ist die Kartenlegerin Christine, deren große Liebe, eine Frau, unheilbar erkrankt ist. Da ist die knallharte Ärztin Elaine, die durch ihre distanzierte Art alle Männer vergrault und sich doch nach Liebe sehnt. Da ist Detective Faber und ihre Scheu vor Männern, die mit ihrer blinden zynischen Schwester Carol zusammenwohnt, die einen Mann nach dem anderen hat...
