Kafka (1991)
Der kränkelnde Kafka arbeitet in einem höchst autoritären Betrieb als Angestellter. Als sein Kollege Edouard, der zum geheimnisvollen Schloß gerufen wurde, tot aufgefunden wird, wird der passive Kafka zur Aktion gedrängt. Er schließt sich einer Untergrundbewegung an und schwärmt für die hübsche Gabriela. Als immer mehr Leichen gefunden werden und Gabriela verschwindet, überwindet Kafka seine Angst und Apathie und besucht selbst das Schloß. Dort macht er eine grausige Entdeckung. Steven Soderbergh ("Sex, Lügen und Video") beschwört in seiner zumeist in bedrohlichen Schwarz-Weiß-Bildern gehaltenen Hommage an den großen Franz Kafka die ausdrucksstarke Stimmung der Filme des deutschen Expressionismus herauf. Dabei verbindet er die Biographie Kafkas mit Elementen und Stimmung seines Ouevres und webt sie in eine nicht immer gänzlich gelungene Krimihandlung mit ein. Oscar- Preisträger Jeremy Irons ("Verhängnis") wird das kunstinteressierte Publikum locken.
