"Der steinerne Garten" ist der Soldatenfriedhof von Arlington bei Washington. 1968 gibt dort eine Einheit den täglich neu gefallenen GIs das letzte Geleit. Der naive Rekrut Jack Willow will trotzdem an die Front. Sein desillusionierter Ausbilder Hazard versucht vergeblich, ihn aufzuhalten. Während Jacks junge Frau daheim auf seine Rückkehr wartet, merkt er erst in der Ferne, wie grausam der Krieg wirklich ist…
