Die Nazis betreiben in einem Kloster im besetzten Frankreich eine Giftgasproduktion für ein todbringendes Nervengas. Major Wright bekommt den Auftrag, eine Gruppe Kämpfer aufzustellen, die die Anlage zerstören und einige der dort arbeitenden Wissenschaftler nach England bringen soll. Für das Himmelfahrtskommando wählt Wright zwölf zum Tode verurteilte Schwerverbrecher, die nichts mehr zu verlieren, aber viel zu gewinnen haben: ihre Freiheit.
