Der Erweckungsprediger Reverend Cotton Marcus ist sehr erfolgreich in seinem Job, dabei fehlt ihm immer öfter der wahre Glaube. Er nutzt sein Schauspieltalent nicht nur für evangelikale Messen, sondern auch für lukrative Teufelsaustreibungen, bei denen er in mitreißenden Shows arme Gläubigerseelen von ihren vermeintlichen Dämonen befreit. Bei seinem letzten Exorzismus will er sich von einem Fernsehteam filmen lassen, um die Austreibung als Märchenstunde für Abergläubische zu entlarven. Im tiefsten Süden soll er die besessene Tochter eines strenggläubigen Mannes heilen...
