Der Motorradfan und Footballspieler Johnny Rourke lebt in einer öden nordamerikanischen Industriestadt und ist aufgrund schlechter Familienverhältnisse ein Außenseiter und Einzelgänger, der gegen alles rebelliert. Die hübsche Cheerleaderin Tracey Prescott stammt aus einer reichen Familie und ist das begehrteste Mädchen der Schule. Als die beiden für einen Ball ihrer Highschool als Paar ausgelost werden, verbringen sie gemeinsam den Abend und verlieben sich ineinander. Nachdem Johnny sich erneut mit seinem alkoholkranken Vater gestritten hat und Tracey ihr scheinbar perfektes Leben hinterfragt, wollen die beiden gemeinsam allen Zwängen und der bürgerlichen Enge der Kleinstadt entfliehen…
