Verdammt sind sie alle (1958)
Kriegsveteran und gescheiterter Schriftsteller Dave kehrt in die Heimatstadt Parkman, Indiana zurück. In der zerrütteten Familie des Bruders bleibt er fremd, in die brave Literaturdozentin Gwen verliebt er sich glücklos. Dave gefolgt ist das leichte Mädchen Ginny, die er vertröstet. Freund wird Spieler und Trinker Bama, der nie den Hut abnimmt. Dave heiratet Ginny, das überall aneckende Paar hat keine Chance. Auf der Hundertjahrfeier von Parkman wird Ginny von einem Verfolger erschossen. Auf ihrem Begräbnis nimmt Bama erstmals seinen Hut ab.
