Meg will einfach nur ein ganz normaler Teenager sein, doch weil die Tochter des berühmten Wissenschaftler-Paares Kate und Alex Murry genau wie ihr Bruder Charles hochintelligent ist, wird sie in der Schule immer anders behandelt – erst recht, als ihr Vater plötzlich verschwindet. Zunächst fühlt sich Meg der Situation machtlos ausgeliefert, doch dann entdeckt sie, dass das neueste Forschungsprojekt ihrer Eltern etwas mit dem Verschwinden ihres Vaters zu tun haben könnte und geht dem Rätsel gemeinsam mit ihrem kleinen Bruder und dem Nachbarsjungen Calvin auf den Grund. Bei ihrer gefährlichen Expedition, die sie durch Raum und Zeit führt, erhalten sie Hilfe von drei mysteriösen Wesen: Mrs. Soundso, Mrs. Wer und Mrs. Welche.
