Punchline - Der Knalleffekt (1988)
Stephen Gold (Tom Hanks) und Lilah Krytsick (Sally Field) sind professionelle Witze-Erzähler. Allabendlich stehen sie auf kleinen Bühnen überall in den USA und versuchen, ihr Publikum mit Gags, Zoten und spritzigen Pointen zum Lachen zu bringen. Ein harter Job. Die Konkurrenz ist groß, das Publikum anspruchsvoll. Als sich die beiden bei einer Show kennen lernen, kann zunächst von gegenseitiger Sympathie keine Rede sein. Steven, das verzogene Muttersöhnchen und Lilah, die biedere Hausfrau, sind so verschieden wie Feuer und Wasser. Doch Gegensätze ziehen sich bekanntlich an. Beide verlieben sich ineinander, werden ein – recht seltsames – Paar und schließlich wieder zu Konkurrenten im Kampf um die besten Jokes
