Neuseeland 1870: In der britischen Kolonie gibt es bewaffnete Auseinandersetzungen zwischen den Kolonialtruppen und europäischen Siedlern (von den Maori Pakeha genannt) einerseits und den Maori andererseits. Aber nicht wenige Maori dienen auch als Soldaten und Scouts in der britischen Armee, darunter Te Wheke. Am Anfang wird ein Maori-Dorf ohne Anlass von einer Einheit der Armee überfallen und alle Einwohner – Alte, Frauen, Kinder – niedergemetzelt. Kurz darauf erscheint ein weiterer Trupp, der nichts davon weiß, und Te Wheke erkundet mit zwei anderen Soldaten die Lage. Entsetzt betrachtet er das Resultat des Gemetzels, dem auch sein Onkel zum Opfer gefallen ist, und er wechselt auf der Stelle die Fronten…
