Seit Sir Francis Drakes Zeiten sind in der Brookfield School ängstliche englische Knaben eingeschult worden… um einige Jahre später als gebildete junge Männer abzugehen, die sich die Bürde des Empire auf die Schultern laden. Englands Elite hat in Brookfield Tradition – und diese Tradition wird von dem alternden Schulleiter verkörpert, den man liebevoll Mr. Chips nennt. Petula Clark spielt jene Frau, deren Lebenslust selbst einem Schulmeister noch einiges beibringen kann. Er lernt seine Lektion. Und die wiederum sorgt für einen zeitlos sympathischen Film. Wer sich selbst gern an einen Lieblingslehrer zurückerinnert, der wird Goodbye, Mr. Chips nicht missen wollen.
