Das Ehepaar Jeffrey und Amy Taylor möchte von Massachusetts nach Kalifornien umziehen und durchquert mit dem Auto das Landesinnere der USA. Bei einer Autopanne hilft der Trucker Warren, der Amy bis zur nächsten Raststätte mit Telefonmöglichkeit mitnimmt. Jeff wartet vergeblich auf Hilfe, kann jedoch den Wagen inzwischen selbst wieder zum Laufen bringen und macht sich auf den Weg zum vereinbarten Treffpunkt. An der Raststätte angekommen, erkundigt sich Jeff nach seiner Frau, die nicht aufzufinden ist. Doch wen er auch fragt – niemand hat seine Frau gesehen, die örtliche Polizei gibt sich machtlos.
