In nicht allzu ferner Zukunft ist die Grenze zwischen Mensch und Maschine noch weiter verschwommen: Nicht nur physisch sind die Androiden ihren Schöpfern mittlerweile zum Verwechseln ähnlich, auch emotional. Dies lernt ein leitender Wissenschaftler (Michael Peña) auf die harte Tour: Der von ganz speziellen Albträumen geplagte Familienvater muss feststellen, dass er selbst nicht gezeugt wurde, sondern geschaffen. Er ist der erste seiner Art und kein Mensch, sondern eine des Fühlens fähige - quasi beseelte - Maschine in Menschengestalt.
