In den 70er-Jahren, lange bevor er zu einem Meister des Bösen aufsteigt, ist Gru einfach ein zwölfjähriger Vorstadtjunge, der in seinem Keller von der Weltherrschaft träumt. Als die berüchtigte Schurkenbande "Die fiesen 6" ihren Anführer rauswirft, bewirbt Gru sich um dessen Nachfolge, endet alsbald jedoch als Todfeind der Bande. Während Gru fliehen muss, lernen die Minions Kampfsport, um ihn zu retten, und Gru findet heraus, dass selbst Schurken manchmal ein bisschen Hilfe von ihren Freunden gebrauchen können.
