Vom Knastbruder zum Filmstar: Das Leben des am 16.05.1944 in Los Angeles, Kalifornien, geborenen Danny Trejo böte sicherlich genug Stoff für ein sehenswertes Hollywood-Biopic. Biografie: Aus sehr einfachen Verhältnissen stammend, saß Danny Trejo aufgrund zahlreicher Raub- und Drogendelikte in jungen Jahren immer wieder im Gefängnis. Dort entdeckte er seine Leidenschaft fürs Boxen, doch auch wenn er hierbei recht erfolgreich war, verhinderte eine längere Haftstrafe eine mögliche Profikarriere. Für den Film Express in die Hölle (1985) fungierte er dann als Boxtrainer von Eric Roberts und kam mit stolzen 43 Jahren zu seiner ersten kleinen Filmrolle. Da er sofort Gefallen am Filmgeschäft fand, spielte Trejo fortan in zahlreichen kleineren Produktionen mit, meist in der Rolle des Bösewichts. Sein vernarbtes Gesicht, der Schnurrbart und die zahlreichen Tattoos machten den neugeborenen Schauspieler schnell zu einem unverwechselbaren Charakter. Im Jahr 1995 folgte dann der Durchbruch in Hollywood: Nicht nur wurde Danny Trejo in Michael Manns gefeiertem Krimiepos Heat für Robert De Niros Gaunerbande gecastet, auch ergatterte er seine erste Rolle in einem Streifen von Robert Rodriguez. Viele weitere sollten folgen: Nach dem Kultfilm Desperado war der Schauspieler unter anderem auch in From Dusk Till Dawn, Spy Kids und Machete dabei. Letzteren durfte er nach einem Vierteljahrhundert im Geschäft endlich als Hauptdarsteller mit dazu passenden ikonischen One-Linern tragen. Der überraschend durchschlagende Erfolg des Films führte zum Sequel Machete Kills und einem angekündigten dritten Teil, Machete Kills Again... In Space! Neben seiner Arbeit mit Rodriguez, der übrigens sein Cousin zweiten Grades ist, dürfte den meisten Filmfans auch Danny Trejos Rolle als "Johnny 23" in Con Air im Gedächtnis geblieben sein.
