Drei Trapper lernen die "Zivilisation" von der schlimmsten Seite kennen, als sie sich von der Armee als Scouts im Kampf gegen die Indianer anwerben lassen. Im Mikrokosmos eines bedrohten Forts mit seinem unfähigen, siegesdurstigen Kommandanten behandelt der Film erstaunlich differenziert Themen wie Macht, Kolonisierung und den Konflikt zwischen Gefühlen und Normen.
