Der Mont Saint-Michel zieht als eines der berühmtesten Fotomotive weltweit jährlich mehrere Millionen Besucher an. Viele Rätsel ranken sich um dieses Labyrinth an verschachtelten Gängen, Treppen und Hallen, das im Laufe der Zeit heidnischer Tempel, Zufluchtsort für Eremiten, starke romanische Abtei, gotisches Wunderwerk der Architektur, uneinnehmbare Festung und Gefängnis war.
