Sommer 1813 - Ein wütender Sharpe sucht die britische Infanterieeinheit, die kürzlich in einer Schlacht gegen die Franzosen gescheitert ist. Er entdeckt, dass die Männer der Infanterie desertieren und kann ihren Rückzug nicht verhindern. Zwischenzeitlich trifft Ellie Nugent, eine Verwandte Wellingtons, mit ihrer Mutter im Lager ein. Sie sind auf der Suche nach Ellies Vater, der verschwand, als er in den nahegelegenen Bergen Gold suchte. Wellington weigert sich, ihnen zu helfen und befiehlt ihnen abzureisen. Wellington ist mit größeren Problemen beschäftigt, da die Zahl seiner Männer schwindet. Er hat zugestimmt 52 gefangene Deserteure im Tausch gegen Baker Gewehre freizulassen. Sharpe soll den Tausch vornehmen und wird von Ellie und ihrer Mutter begleitet.
