Laura Reynolds ist alleinerziehend und hat Schwierigkeiten sich an die Gesellschaft anzupassen. Ihren Sohn Danny unterrichtet sie aus Überzeugung von zu Hause aus, glaubt sie doch nicht an das öffentliche Schulsystem. Als Danny anfängt bei der Polizei auffällig zu werden, schickt man ihn auf ein christliches Internat am Meer. Natürlich ist dies strikt gegen Lauras Konvention und sie versucht zu verhindern, dass ihr Sohn auf eine öffentliche Schule muss. Zwecklos. So begleitet sie Danny, als er sich bei der Einrichtung vorstellen muss. Sie verliebt sich in den Direktor der Schule, den verheirateten Dr. Edward Hewitt und beginnt eine Affäre mit ihm, trotz aller gegensätzlichen gesellschaftlichen Überzeugungen. Doch ein Kollege wird eifersüchtig und bringt das Verhältnis ans Tageslicht...
