Dies ist die Geschichte einer der reichsten und angesehensten Familien des Staates Indiana um das Jahr 1873, ihres Lebens und Niedergangs. Es ist zugleich die Geschichte Eugene Morgans, der durch ein läppisches Missgeschick die Gunst der schönen Isabel Amberson verliert, aber dafür durch den Bau "pferdloser Wagen" ein Vermögen verdient. Reich und unabhängig geworden, kehrt er in Begleitung seiner Tochter Lucy in die Heimatstadt zurück. Noch einmal nähert er sich der verwitweten Isabel. Doch Isabels selbstsüchtiger Sohn George stellt sich ihrem Glück in den Weg...
