Mark Robson begann seine 45-jährige Karriere in Hollywood als Filmeditor. Später arbeitete er als Regisseur und Produzent. Im Laufe seiner Karriere drehte er 34 Filme, darunter Zwischen Frauen und Seilen (1949), Sieg über das Dunkel (1951), Die Brücken von Toko-Ri (1954), Glut unter der Asche (1957), Die Herberge zur 6. Glückseligkeit (1958), Von Ryans Express (1965), Das Tal der Puppen (1967) und Erdbeben (1974). Robson wurde zweimal für den Oscar für die beste Regie nominiert – für Glut unter der Asche und Die Herberge zur 6. Glückseligkeit – sowie viermal für den Directors Guild of America Award für herausragende Regie bei Spielfilmen. Zwei seiner Filme wurden für die Goldene Palme der Filmfestspiele von Cannes nominiert.
