Hattie McDaniel war eine US-amerikanische Schauspielerin, die für ihre Darstellung der Mammy in „Vom Winde verweht“ (1939) den Oscar als Beste Nebendarstellerin gewann und damit als erste Afroamerikanerin einen Academy Award erhielt. Nachdem sie bereits in den 1910er-Jahren als Sängerin in einer Band gearbeitet hatte, gab Hattie McDaniel ihr Filmdebüt als Dienstmädchen in „The Golden West“ (1932). Ihre Rollen als Dienstmädchen und Mammy wurden zunehmend selbstbewusster, erstmals in „Judge Priest“ (1934) und schließlich in „Alice Adams“ (1935). In diesem Film, unter der Regie von George Stevens und mit Katharine Hepburn an der Seite von Star, macht sie deutlich, dass sie wenig von dem Statusstreben ihrer Arbeitgeber hält. In „The Mad Miss Manton“ (1938) weist die von ihr verkörperte Figur ihre mondäne Arbeitgeberin Barbara Stanwyck und deren hochnäsige Freundinnen sogar zurecht. Dieser Weg führte sie zu ihrer größten Rolle als Mammy in „Vom Winde verweht“ (1939). Von da an ging es mit McDaniels Rollen bergab, und ihre Charaktere wurden immer unbedeutender. In den 1930er- und 1940er-Jahren wirkte McDaniel in den Radiosendungen „Amos and Andy“ und „Eddie Cantor“ mit, sprach die Titelrolle in ihrer eigenen Radiosendung „Beulah“ (1947–1951) und verkörperte dieselbe Rolle auch im Fernsehen („Beulah“, 1950).
