Als Kind in den 1930er Jahren, aufgewachsen in einem rauen New Yorker Viertel, sog der quirlige und schlagfertige Larry Storch die multikulturelle Atmosphäre seiner Umgebung auf und ahmte schon früh verschiedene Akzente nach, um Lacher zu ernten und Aufmerksamkeit zu erregen. Er ahnte damals noch nicht, dass ihn dieses Talent auf eine sechs Jahrzehnte währende Karriere als gefeierter Schauspieler und Komiker führen würde. Larrys Gabe als Imitator zahlte sich bereits als Teenager in Varietétheatern aus. Nach seinem Militärdienst als Matrose im Zweiten Weltkrieg (1942–1946) führte eine zufällige Begegnung mit dem Komiker Phil Harris in Palm Springs zu einem Engagement als Vorprogramm für Lucille Ball und Desi Arnaz in Ciro's. Von dort aus gelang ihm sein bis dahin größter Durchbruch im Radio mit der „Kraft Music Hall“, als er für den erkrankten Frank Morgan einsprang. Larry lieferte nicht nur seine patentierten Star-Imitationen ab, sondern lieferte auch eine urkomische Parodie von Morgan selbst ab, die ein Riesenerfolg wurde.
