Samuel Southey Hinds (4. April 1875 – 13. Oktober 1948) war ein US-amerikanischer Schauspieler und ehemaliger Anwalt. Er verkörperte häufig gutmütige, aber autoritäre Charaktere und wirkte bis zu seinem Tod in über 200 Filmen mit. Hinds wurde in Brooklyn, New York, als Sohn von Joseph E. Hinds und Mary A. Beetham Hinds geboren. Nach seinem Abschluss an der Phillips Andover Academy und der Harvard Law School arbeitete er über 32 Jahre als Anwalt, bevor er professioneller Schauspieler wurde. Nachdem er in der Finanzkrise von 1929 den Großteil seines Vermögens verloren hatte, gab Hinds seine Anwaltstätigkeit auf und schloss sich dem Pasadena Community Playhouse an. Er begann seine Schauspielkarriere am Broadway im Alter von 54 Jahren. Hinds ist wohl am bekanntesten für seine Rolle als Peter Bailey, Vater von James Stewart und Gründer der Bailey Building and Loan, in „Ist das Leben nicht schön?“ (1946) und als Paul Sycamore in „Man kann’s nicht mitnehmen“ (1938), beides Filme unter der Regie von Frank Capra. Hinds war auch bekannt für seine Rollen in den Abbott-und-Costello-Filmen wie „Buck Privates“ (1941), „Ride ’Em Cowboy“ (1942) und „Pardon My Sarong“ (1942). Anfang der 1940er-Jahre verkörperte er außerdem Lew Ayres’ Vater in der Dr.-Kildare-Filmreihe. Hinds spielte meist Nebenrollen, oft freundliche und würdevolle Autoritätsfiguren; häufig Anwälte, Ärzte, Bürgermeister, Richter oder den Vater der Hauptfigur. Hinds’ erster Film war „Wenn ich eine Million hätte“ (1932). Sein zweiter Film war „The Road Is Open Again“ (1933), in dem er Präsident Woodrow Wilson verkörperte. Seine frühere Karriere spiegelte sich in der Rolle des Richters Thatcher wider, der in „The Raven“ (1935) von dem wahnsinnigen Dr. Richard Vollin (Bela Lugosi) gefoltert wird. Hinds wirkte in insgesamt 214 Filmen mit. Sein letzter Film war „The Bribe“, der 1949 posthum veröffentlicht wurde. Hinds starb am 13. Oktober 1948 im Alter von 73 Jahren in Pasadena, Kalifornien, an einer Lungenentzündung. Er war mit Dorothy Cruickshack verheiratet; das Paar hatte zwei Kinder.
