Greta Garbo (* 18. September 1905 als Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in Stockholm; † 15. April 1990 in New York City) war eine schwedisch-amerikanische Filmschauspielerin. Sie gilt als Hollywood-Ikone und wurde vom American Film Institute 1999 in seiner Liste der 25 größten weiblichen Leinwandlegenden aller Zeiten auf Platz 5 gewählt. Aufgrund ihrer zeitlosen Schönheit und ihrer geheimnisvollen Ausstrahlung erhielt sie von der Presse Beinamen wie „die Göttliche“ oder „schwedische Sphinx“. Ihre Filmkarriere begann Anfang der 1920er Jahre und dauerte knapp zwei Jahrzehnte. Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Stars der Stummfilm-Ära schaffte Greta Garbo den Übergang zum Tonfilm. 1941 zog sie sich von der Leinwand zurück. Auf der Oscarverleihung 1955 wurde die Schauspielerin für ihre „unvergesslichen Leinwandauftritte“ mit einem Ehrenoscar ausgezeichnet.
