In Spielsalons und auf verschwenderischen Soirées geben wohlhabende Männer den Ton an und die als Kurtisanen abgestempelten Frauen genießen das Leben in vollen Zügen. Zu ihnen gehört auch Marguerite Gautier, die Kameliendame in dieser opulente Romanze nach der unsterblichen Geschichte von Alexandre Dumas. Garbos mystische Unnahbarkeit, ihre alabasterne Schönheit bringen den von George Cukor inszenierten Film zum Leuchten oft wird er als ihre beste Leistung bezeichnet. Ihre Kameliendame ist der Inbegriff wahrer Liebe (für ihren Verehrer Armand Duval, einprägsam gespielt von Robert Taylor), die sie aber einem höheren Zweck opfert.
