Barry Norton (geboren als Alfredo Carlos Birabén; 16. Juni 1905 – 24. August 1956) war ein argentinisch-amerikanischer Schauspieler. Er wirkte in über 90 Filmen mit, angefangen bei Stummfilmen von 1925 bis zu seinem Tod 1956. Bekannt wurde er vor allem durch seine Rolle als Juan Harker in der spanischsprachigen Version von „Drácula“ (Universal Pictures, 1931), die er in der englischen Originalfassung von Jonathan Harker verkörperte, die ursprünglich von David Manners gespielt wurde. Norton kam in den 1920er-Jahren nach Hollywood und hatte zunächst einen Statistenauftritt in „Der schwarze Pirat“ (1926), wurde aber noch im selben Jahr für Fox Films‘ „Die Lilie“ engagiert. Sein großer Durchbruch gelang ihm mit der Rolle des Gefreiten „Muttersöhnchen“ Lewisohn in „What Price Glory?“, der sich als großer kommerzieller Erfolg erwies. Auch in „Die Legion der Verurteilten“ und „4 Teufel“ (beide 1928) spielte er bedeutende Rollen, die ebenfalls sehr erfolgreich waren. Seine schauspielerischen Leistungen wurden von Publikum und Kritikern gleichermaßen gelobt, und während der Stummfilmzeit entging er der Festlegung auf die Rolle des Latin Lovers. Ein Theaterbesitzer in Golden City, Montana, sagte: „[Norton] hat mir noch nie eine schlechte Vorstellung gegeben. Er ist ein Naturtalent.“ Anfang der 1930er-Jahre konnte Norton weiterhin Hauptrollen in großen Filmen ergattern. Die großen Hollywood-Studios begannen, ihre Prestigeproduktionen in zwei Sprachen zu produzieren, und er wurde einer der Dutzenden benötigten Latino-Schauspieler. „Drácula“ war einer dieser Filme, aber Norton wirkte auch in spanischsprachigen Fassungen von „Paramount on Parade“ (1930), „The Benson Murder Case“ (1930) und „The Criminal Code“ (1931) mit. In einigen Fällen war er sogar in beiden Versionen eines Films zu sehen. Beispiele hierfür sind „Sturm über den Anden“ (spanische Version: „Alas sobre El Chaco“), „Der Seeungeheuer“ (El diablo del Mar) und „Kapitän Calamity“ (El capitan Tormenta), wobei er in letzterem Film wieder mit Lupita Tovar, seiner Geliebten aus „Dracula“, zusammenarbeitete. Neben Rollen in Filmen, die im spanischen Kolonialgebiet gedreht wurden, spielte er in zahlreichen großen Filmen mit, meist als kultivierter Europäer. Mit dem Rückgang der spanischsprachigen Filmproduktion in Los Angeles wurden Nortons Angebote für Hauptrollen immer seltener. Obwohl er eine angenehme Stimme hatte, wirkte sein argentinischer Akzent unpassend zu seinem Aussehen. Laut einigen Quellen beherrschte er Englisch nie richtig. 1933 erhielt er seine letzte bedeutende Rolle als Jean Parkers spanischer Verlobter in Frank Capras „Lady for a Day“ (1933). Obwohl er noch 15 Jahre weiterarbeitete, war Nortons letzte Filmrolle, für die er im Abspann erwähnt wurde, „Should Husbands Work?“ (1939). Norton lebte den Rest seiner Karriere in Los Angeles und übernahm kleinere Filmrollen. Viele seiner Filme gelten heute als Klassiker.
