Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs diente er beim Royal Army Service Corps. Er wurde aus Dünkirchen evakuiert. Nach einem Jahr im Krankenhaus wurde er 1941 aus dem Dienst entlassen. Ab 1945 arbeitete er für die BBC Drama Repertory Company. Bis 1949 war er vor allem als Stimme des Sonderagenten Dick Barton im Radio bekannt.
