Harry Lillis „Bing“ Crosby Jr. (3. Mai 1903 – 14. Oktober 1977) war ein US-amerikanischer Sänger, Komiker und Schauspieler. Als erster Multimedia-Star war Crosby von 1931 bis 1954 führend in den Bereichen Plattenverkäufe, Radio-Einschaltquoten und Kinoeinnahmen. Seine frühe Karriere fiel mit Innovationen in der Aufnahmetechnik zusammen, die es ihm ermöglichten, einen intimen Gesangsstil zu entwickeln, der viele nachfolgende Sänger wie Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Dick Haymes und Dean Martin beeinflusste. Das Magazin „Yank“ bezeichnete ihn als denjenigen, der während des Zweiten Weltkriegs „am meisten zur Moral der im Ausland stationierten Soldaten beigetragen“ habe. 1948 wurde er in amerikanischen Umfragen zum „meistbewunderten Mann der Welt“ gewählt, noch vor Jackie Robinson und Papst Pius XII. Ebenfalls 1948 schätzte „Music Digest“, dass seine Aufnahmen mehr als die Hälfte der 80.000 wöchentlichen Stunden Radiomusik ausmachten. Crosby gewann 1944 für seine Rolle als Pater Chuck O'Malley in dem Film „Der Weg zum Glück“ den Oscar als Bester Hauptdarsteller und wurde im darauffolgenden Jahr für seine erneute Darstellung derselben Rolle in „Die Glocken von St. Marien“ an der Seite von Ingrid Bergman nominiert. Er war damit der erste von sechs Schauspielern, die zweimal für dieselbe Figur nominiert wurden. 1963 erhielt Crosby den ersten Grammy Global Achievement Award. Er ist einer von 33 Menschen, die drei Sterne auf dem Hollywood Walk of Fame besitzen – in den Kategorien Film, Radio und Tonaufnahme. Bekannt war er auch für seine Zusammenarbeit mit seinem langjährigen Freund Bob Hope in den „Road to…“-Filmen, die von 1940 bis 1962 gemeinsam aufgeführt wurden. Crosby prägte die Entwicklung der Nachkriegs-Tonbandindustrie. Nachdem er eine Vorführung eines deutschen Tonbandgeräts in Rundfunkqualität gesehen hatte, das von John T. Mullin nach Amerika gebracht worden war, investierte er 50.000 US-Dollar in das kalifornische Elektronikunternehmen Ampex, um Kopien des Geräts herzustellen. Er überzeugte ABC, ihm die Aufzeichnung seiner Sendungen zu gestatten. Er war der erste Künstler, der seine Radiosendungen vorproduzierte und seine kommerziellen Aufnahmen auf Magnetband masterte. Durch die Aufzeichnung nutzte er für seine Radioprogramme dieselben Regietechniken und das gleiche handwerkliche Können (Schnitt, Wiederholungen, Proben, Timeshifting) wie in der Filmproduktion – eine Praxis, die zum Branchenstandard wurde. Neben seiner Arbeit mit frühen Tonbandaufnahmen beteiligte er sich an der Finanzierung der Videobandentwicklung, kaufte Fernsehsender, züchtete Rennpferde und war Miteigentümer des Baseballteams Pittsburgh Pirates.
