Der selbstbewußte Yankee Virgil Smith reist um die Jahrhundertwende nach Österreich, um am Hofe Kaiser Franz Josephs für einen neuen Apparat zu werben: das Grammophon. Unterdes bandelt sein Hund Buttons mit einer adeligen Pudeldame an. Auf diese Weise macht Smith die Bekanntschaft der schönen Gräfin Johanna und erobert ihr Herz.
