Sir Alan Arthur Bates CBE (17. Februar 1934 – 27. Dezember 2003) war ein englischer Schauspieler, der in den 1960er-Jahren, einer Zeit großer Kreativität im britischen Kino, bekannt wurde. Er bewies seine Vielseitigkeit in Filmen, die von der beliebten Kindergeschichte „Whistle Down the Wind“ bis zum Sozialdrama „A Kind of Loving“ reichten. Bekannt ist er auch für seine herausragende Leistung an der Seite von Anthony Quinn in „Alexis Sorbas“ sowie für seine Rollen in „King of Hearts“, „Georgy Girl“, „Am grünen Rand der Welt“ und „Der Fixer“, für den er eine Oscar-Nominierung als Bester Hauptdarsteller erhielt. 1969 spielte er in Ken Russells Film „Women in Love“ mit Oliver Reed und Glenda Jackson. Bates spielte anschließend Hauptrollen in „Der Mittler“, „Eine entheiratete Frau“, „Nijinsky“ und „Die Rose“ an der Seite von Bette Midler und übernahm diverse Rollen in Fernsehserien wie „Der Bürgermeister von Casterbridge“, Harold Pinters „Die Sammlung“, „Eine Reise um meinen Vater“, „Ein Engländer im Ausland“ (als Guy Burgess) und „Pack of Lies“. Auch auf der Bühne war er weiterhin präsent, insbesondere in Stücken von Simon Gray wie „Butley“ und „Otherwise Engaged“.
