Geboren in Summitville, Indiana. Nach seinem Abschluss an der Butler University im Jahr 1976 verfeinerte er sein schauspielerisches Talent am Christian Theological Seminary Reportory Theater der Butler University. Er war an zahlreichen Spielstätten in Indiana aktiv, darunter das Brown County Playhouse, das Black Curtain Dinner Theatre und Starlight Musicals. Später zog er nach New York und schließlich nach Hollywood. Sein großer Durchbruch gelang ihm mit seinem Auftritt in „Brubaker“, wo er sich mit Robert Redford anfreundete. Dies führte zu seiner Rolle in „Der Unbeugsame“.
