Jean Arthur war eine amerikanische Schauspielerin und ein großer Filmstar der 1930er und 1940er Jahre. Sie gilt bis heute als Inbegriff der Screwball-Komödie. James Harvey schrieb in seiner Chronik dieser Ära: „Niemand war so eng mit der Screwball-Komödie verbunden wie Jean Arthur. Sie war so sehr Teil davon, so sehr wurde ihre Star-Persönlichkeit davon geprägt, dass der Screwball-Stil selbst ohne sie fast unvorstellbar erscheint.“ Arthur wurde als „die Quintessenz der komödiantischen Hauptdarstellerin“ bezeichnet. Arthur ist vor allem für ihre Hauptrollen in drei Filmen von Frank Capra bekannt: „Mr. Deeds geht in die Stadt“ (1936), „Man kann’s nicht mitnehmen“ (1938) und „Mr. Smith geht nach Washington“ (1939), Filme, die die Heldin des Alltags feierten. Ihre letzte Rolle war die denkwürdige – und ausgesprochen nicht-komödiantische – Rolle der Ranchersfrau in George Stevens’ „Shane“ (1953). Arthur wurde 1944 für ihre Leistung in „Je mehr, desto besser“ (1943) für den Oscar als beste Hauptdarstellerin nominiert.
