James Hayter (23. April 1907 – 27. März 1983) war ein britischer Schauspieler. Er wurde in Lonavala, Indien, geboren, wuchs in Schottland auf und starb in Spanien. Zu seinen bekanntesten Filmrollen zählen Bruder Tuck in „Robin Hood und seine lustigen Gesellen“ (1952) und Samuel Pickwick in „Die Pickwickier“ (ebenfalls 1952). Sein rundliches Aussehen und seine sonore Stimme prädestinierten ihn für solche Rollen. Nach seinem Besuch der Dollar Academy absolvierte er die Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Seine Filmkarriere begann 1936 mit „Sensation“, wurde jedoch durch den Zweiten Weltkrieg unterbrochen, in dem er im Royal Armoured Corps diente. Später wirkte er in Fernsehserien wie „Die Forsyte-Saga“ (1967), „Die Onedin-Linie“ und „Are You Being Served?“ mit. Seine 1946 auf der BBC ausgestrahlte Fernsehserie „Pinwright's Progress“ gilt als erstes Beispiel für das halbstündige Sitcom-Format in der Geschichte des britischen Fernsehens. Er war auch der erste Sprecher der britischen Fernsehwerbung für Mr. Kipling-Kuchen. Diese Werbung führte sogar zu seinem Ausstieg aus der Sendung „Are You Being Served?“. Der Kuchenhersteller zahlte ihm eine beträchtliche Prämie für seinen Ausstieg, da man der Meinung war, sein Ruf verlieh der Werbung für die Snacks einen Hauch von Seriosität. Im Film „Oliver!“ spielte er Mr. Jessop, den Buchhändler. Er war in Szenen zu sehen, in denen Dodger einem Herrn vor dem Buchladen die Brieftasche stiehlt und auch, als Oliver wegen des Raubes vor Gericht steht. Hayter hatte früher ein Baumhaus in seinem Garten, in das er sich abends zurückzog, um seine Texte für das jeweilige Drehbuch zu lernen und zu üben.
