Joan Crawford (geboren als Lucille Fay LeSueur) war eine US-amerikanische Schauspielerin. Sie begann ihre Karriere als Tänzerin in reisenden Theatergruppen, bevor sie ihr Broadway-Debüt gab. 1925 erhielt Crawford einen Filmvertrag bei Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. In den 1930er-Jahren konkurrierte Crawfords Ruhm mit dem ihrer MGM-Kolleginnen Norma Shearer und Greta Garbo. Crawford wurde zu einem der prominentesten Filmstars Hollywoods und zu einer der bestbezahlten Frauen in den Vereinigten Staaten, doch ihre Filme begannen, Verluste einzufahren. Ende der 1930er-Jahre galt sie als Kassengift. Nach fast zweijähriger Leinwandabstinenz feierte Crawford mit der Hauptrolle in „Mildred Pierce“ (1945) ein Comeback, für die sie den Oscar als Beste Hauptdarstellerin gewann. Sie wirkte bis in die 1960er-Jahre regelmäßig in Film und Fernsehen mit, ihre Auftritte wurden jedoch seltener. Nach dem Erscheinen des Horrorfilms „Trog“ im Jahr 1970 zog sich Crawford endgültig von der Leinwand zurück. Nach einem öffentlichen Auftritt 1974, im Anschluss an den unvorteilhafte Fotos veröffentlicht wurden, zog sie sich vollständig bis zu ihrem Tod 1977 aus der Öffentlichkeit zurück.
