Van Johnson (* 25. August 1916 in Newport, Rhode Island, als Charles Van Dell Johnson; † 12. Dezember 2008 in Nyack, New York) war ein US-amerikanischer Schauspieler. Nach einigen Erfolgen am Broadway ging er mit einem Vertrag bei Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer nach Hollywood. Eine seiner ersten Rollen hatte er als Ersatz für Lew Ayres in der Krankenhausfilmreihe Dr. Kildare neben Lionel Barrymore. Der Durchbruch gelang Johnson 1943 mit dem Kriegsfilm Kampf in den Wolken neben Spencer Tracy und Irene Dunne. Innerhalb von zwei Jahren stieg er von kleinen Nebenrollen, bei denen er oft den „netten jungen Mann von nebenan“ spielte, zu einem der zehn kassenträchtigsten Stars der Filmindustrie auf. Das Studio setzte ihn häufig neben June Allyson und Esther Williams in aufwändig produzierten Musicals und Romanzen ein. 1949 war er als Partner von Judy Garland in Damals im Sommer zu sehen. Mit dem Kriegsende konnte Johnson seine Popularität zunächst noch einige Jahre halten. Als sie Anfang der 1950er-Jahre merklich nachließ, wandte Johnson sich auch dem dramatischen Fach zu. 1954 spielte er eine seiner besten Rollen neben Humphrey Bogart in dem Kriegsdrama Die Caine war ihr Schicksal und war auch in der Musicalverfilmung Brigadoon neben Gene Kelly zu sehen. Nach dem Ende seines Vertrages bei MGM war Johnson im Kino nur noch in Nebenrollen oder mittelmäßigen Filmen zu sehen, stattdessen drehte er aber vermehrt für das Fernsehen und hatte am Theater unter anderem mit dem Musical The Music Man Erfolg. Im Jahr 1976 war Johnson für seine Mitwirkung in der Fernsehserie Reich und Arm für einen Emmy nominiert, was die einzige Berücksichtigung für einen wichtigen Filmpreis in seiner Karriere blieb. Im Fernsehen war er in der Zeit danach unter anderem in drei Folgen der Krimiserie Mord ist ihr Hobby neben Angela Lansbury zu sehen. 1992 spielte er neben Fred Williamson in dem Thriller Three Days to a Kill seine letzte Kinorolle.
