Elizabeth Maria Peña war eine US-amerikanische Schauspielerin und die Tochter eines Mitbegründers einer Theatergruppe. Sie sammelte auch selbst Erfahrung als Fernsehregisseurin. 1979 gab Peña ihr Filmdebüt in „El Super“. Peña wirkte in Filmen wie „La Bamba“, „Down and Out in Beverly Hills“, „Lone Star“, „Vibes“ und „Rush Hour“ mit. 2002 spielte sie die Hauptrolle der Tia Bibi Corrades in der Showtime-Serie „Resurrection Blvd.“ in der Folge „Justicia“, bei der sie auch Regie führte. Im darauffolgenden Jahr, 2003, wirkte sie in der Folge „It Was Fun While It Lasted“ der Serie „The Brothers Garcia“ mit und führte auch bei dieser Regie. Obwohl die Schauspielerin Spanisch spricht, synchronisiert sie ihre Stimme für spanische Veröffentlichungen nicht selbst. Peña ist außerdem bekannt für ihre Rolle als Dora Calderon, die titelgebende „Dora“, in der Sitcom „I Married Dora“, die 1987 nach nur 13 Folgen abgesetzt wurde. In der letzten Folge durchbrach die Besetzung die „vierte Wand“ der Fiktion, indem sie die Absetzung der Serie vor laufender Kamera verkündete und sich mit einem Vorhang verabschiedete.
