Die beruflichen und gleichzeitig amurösen Abenteuer von vier Mitgliedern einer New Yorker Detektivagentur. Während John (Ben Gazzarra), geschieden und mit zwei Töchtern, auf die Industriellengattin Angela Niotes (Audrey Hepburn) angesetzt wird, um zu überprüfen, ob sie während ihres Stadtbesuchts untreu wird, haben die Detektive Charles (John Ritter) und Arthur (Blaine Novak) mit der Beschattung einer Blondine (Dorothy Stratten) zu tun, in die sich Charles glatt verliebt. Während ihr Chef ein kaum verschleiertes Verhältnis mit seiner Sekretärin hat, verkomplizieren eine eifersüchtige Country-Sängerin (Colleen Camp), eine Taxifahrerin (Patti Hansen), diverse andere Mädchen und Johns eigene Gefühle für sein Überwachungsobjekt die Arbeit.
