Chris Menges ist ein britischer Kameramann und Filmregisseur. Er ist Mitglied der amerikanischen und britischen Kameragesellschaft. Er begann seine Karriere in den 1960er Jahren als Kameramann für Dokumentarfilme und für Filme wie „Poor Cow“ von Ken Loach und „If…“ von Lindsay Anderson. „Kes“ unter der Regie von Ken Loach war sein erster Spielfilm als Kameramann. Menges stand 1971 auch bei Stephen Frears' erstem Spielfilm Gumshoe hinter der Kamera. Nach mehreren Dokumentar- und Spielfilmen wie Black Beauty (1971), Blutige Streiche (1978) und Angel (1982) wurde Menges für anspruchsvollere Arbeiten bekannt, für die er von der Kritik gefeiert wurde. 1983 erhielt Menges seine erste BAFTA-Nominierung für Bill Forsyths Film Local Hero und gewann nur ein Jahr später seinen ersten Oscar für den Film The Killing Fields über den Völkermord in Kambodscha. Er setzte seine Arbeit mit Regisseur Roland Joffe fort und gewann 1986 seinen zweiten Oscar für das Historiendrama The Mission. Außerdem drehte er 1983 das Fernsehspiel Made in Britain mit Tim Roth in der Hauptrolle. 1988 gab Menges sein Regiedebüt mit Zwei Welten. Dieser Film wurde 1988 bei den Filmfestspielen von Cannes gefeiert und gewann drei bedeutende Preise. Sein zweiter Film als Regisseur, Criss Cross (1992), erhielt zwar viel Lob, floppte aber an den Kinokassen. 1996 kehrte er hinter die Kamera zurück und drehte die preisgekrönten Filme „Der Boxer“ (Regie: Jim Sheridan) und „Michael Collins“. Für Letzteren erhielt er 1997 seine dritte Oscar-Nominierung.
