Barbara Pepper (geboren als Marion B. Pepper; 31. Mai 1915 – 18. Juli 1969) war eine US-amerikanische Bühnen-, Fernseh-, Radio- und Filmschauspielerin. Bekannt wurde sie vor allem als erste „Doris Ziffel“ in der Sitcom „Green Acres“. Pepper wurde in New York City als Tochter des Schauspielers David Mitchell „Dave“ Pepper und seiner Frau Harrietta S. Pepper geboren. Mit 16 Jahren begann sie ihre Karriere im Showbusiness bei den Goldwyn Girls, einer Musical-Theatergruppe, wo sie ihre lebenslange Freundin Lucille Ball kennenlernte. Pepper drehte später Filme. Zu ihren Filmrollen zählten kleinere Auftritte in „My Fair Lady“ und „Eine total, total verrückte Welt“. Sie wirkte auch im Radio mit. 1943 heiratete sie den Schauspieler Craig Reynolds (geb. Harold Hugh Enfield), und das Paar bekam später zwei Söhne. Nach Reynolds’ Tod 1949 bei einem Motorradunfall in Kalifornien musste Pepper die Kinder allein erziehen. Sie heiratete nie wieder. Nachdem sie an Gewicht zugenommen hatte, beschränkten sich ihre Rollen im Fernsehen größtenteils auf kleinere Nebenrollen, darunter mehrere Auftritte in „I Love Lucy“, der „George Burns and Gracie Allen Show“, „Petticoat Junction“ und der „Jack Benny Program“. Sie hatte vier Gastauftritte in „Perry Mason“, unter anderem als Martha Dale, Mutter der Titelfigur, in der Folge „Der Fall der Vagabundin“ von 1957. Barbara, eine langjährige Freundin von Lucille Ball, wurde für die Rolle der Ethel Mertz in „I Love Lucy“ in Betracht gezogen, jedoch aufgrund ihres angeblichen Alkoholproblems abgelehnt. Auch William Frawley („Fred Mertz“) soll Alkoholiker gewesen sein und war bereits besetzt. Da man befürchtete, dass zwei trinkende Schauspieler im Ensemble zu Problemen führen könnten, wurden Castings veranstaltet, und Vivian Vance wurde schließlich für die Rolle der Ethel ausgewählt. Am bekanntesten dürfte sie wohl als erste Doris Ziffel in der Fernsehserie „Petticoat Junction“ von 1964 sein, obwohl ihre Figur in der Folge „Genghis Keane“ Ruth Ziffel hieß. Von 1965 bis 1968 verkörperte sie die Doris Ziffel in der Serie „Green Acres“, bis sie aus gesundheitlichen Gründen die wöchentliche Serie verlassen musste. Die erfahrene Schauspielerin Fran Ryan übernahm ihre Rolle in „Green Acres“, die noch drei weitere Jahre lief. Ihren letzten Auftritt hatte sie 1969 in dem Film „Hook, Line & Sinker“, in dem sie Jerry Lewis’ Sekretärin spielte.
