Actor estadounidense nacido en el Bronx (Nueva York). Desde finales de los años cincuenta trabaja como actor de teatro, primero en una compañía itinerante y más tarde en Broadway. Aunque llega al cine de la mano de Billy Wilder en Irma la Dulce (1963), será Howard Hawks quien le dé su primera gran oportunidad, primero en Peligro… Línea 7000 (1965), donde interpreta a un piloto de carreras y, sobre todo, en El Dorado (1967), enésima revisión del tema hawksiano de la redención de un grupo de hombres esencialmente honestos ante una situación límite. Pero la figura más importante de su carrera artística es sin lugar a dudas Francis Ford Coppola, que en 1968 le ofrece su primer gran papel: encarnar a un patético retrasado en la "road-movie" Llueve sobre mi corazón. También a Coppola debe el que es su personaje más conocido, el violento Santino “Sonny” Corleone en la saga de El Padrino (1972-74), por el que es nominado al Oscar de la Academia al mejor actor secundario. Gran deportista desde su época universitaria en Michigan State, se especializa en papeles de acción, como en la fantasía deportiva Rollerball (1975), de Norman Jewison, o en Los Aristócratas del Crimen (1975), donde tiene la oportunidad de trabajar junto a Robert Duvall, otro actor-fetiche de Coppola, con uno de los grandes directores del género, Sam Peckinpah, sobre un guión de Stirlling Silliphant. Al mismo tiempo, participa en peliculas más intimistas, como El Jugador (The Gambler) de Karel Reisz o Perdido en la ciudad (T. R. Baskin) de Herbert Ross, con quien vuelve a colaborar en Funny Lady (1975). Otro de los directores clave en su carrera es Mark Rydell: su colaboración comienza en 1973 con la amable Permiso para amar hasta medianoche y continúa con Harry y Walter van a Nueva York. Su versatilidad como actor queda demostrada en comedias como La última locura, de Mel Brooks o en sus dos colaboraciones con el sensiblero Claude Lelouch: Otro hombre y otra mujer (1977), secuela de su gran éxito Un hombre y una mujer, y Los unos y los otros (1981). En los años ochenta, su carrera entra en declive, pese a lo cual realiza algunas de sus mejores interpretaciones, como en el western crepuscular Llega un jinete libre y salvaje (1978), dirigida por Alan J. Pakula y espléndidamente fotografiada por Gordon Willis, donde se enfrenta a una gran compañía petrolífera que pretende arrebatar a Jane Fonda su rancho. El fracaso de su debut como director en Hide in plain sight (1980) acentúa su crisis profesional, que se ve agravada por sus problemas de adicción a las drogas y el alcohol. En este delicado momento personal, su amigo Francis Ford Coppola vuelve a ejercer de auténtico “padrino” al ofrecerle un papel protagonista en el drama militar Jardines de piedra (1987), que supone el inicio de una segunda juventud. Otro viejo amigo, Mark Rydell, le proporciona en 1991 el protagonista de Ayer, hoy y siempre, donde interpreta junto a Bette Midler a una pareja de veteranos cantantes enrolados en las fuerzas armadas, que han dedicado toda su vida a entretener a las tropas en los distintos conflictos bélicos del último siglo.
