Cuenta atrás (1967)
Cuando la NASA se da cuenta de que los rusos están a punto de conseguir llevar a un hombre a la Luna, la agencia comienza a entrenar a un astronauta para adelantar a los rusos. Los astronautas candidatos a ser el primer hombre en pisar la luna son Lee Stegler (James Caan), Chiz (Robert Duvall) y Rick (Michael Murphy). Entre Lee y Chiz existe una pequeña rivalidad compartida por sus esposas. Olvidando su relativa inexperiencia, Lee es el elegido por la NASA. Olvidando sus diferencias Chiz comienza a instruirle en como sobrevivir en el espacio. Pero los entrenamientos son detenidos repentinamente cuando se descubre que una nave rusa, el Vostok, está maniobrando para preparar el alunizaje. No hay tiempo de más preparación y Lee se hunde. Si llega a la Luna deberá permanecer allí todo un año en una estación lunar hasta que la cápsula del Apolo pueda acudir a rescatarle.
