Director de cine y fotografía británico nacido en Yarouth. Trabajó desde los cuatro años como actor infantil hasta que comenzó su aprendizaje como operador de cámara, labor que ejerció en numerosas películas, entre ellas El fantasma va al Oeste (1937), de René Clair y Eso que llaman amor (1937), de Harold Schuster, la primera película británica en color. En Las cuatro plumas (1939), de Zoltan Korda, realizó la labor de director de fotografía y operador de la segunda unidad. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial colaboró con el Ministerio de Información en la fotografía de numerosos documentales, entre los que destaca Western Approaches (1944). Tras la guerra, se convirtió en uno de los mejores directores de fotografía británicos y en un verdadero artista de la fotografía en color. Entre sus trabajos más conocidos se encuentran sus colaboraciones con los directores Michael Powell y Emeric Pressburger, A vida o muerte (1946) y Narciso negro (1947), por la que consiguió el Oscar de la Academia, o Las zapatillas rojas (1948). Su enorme prestigio le llevó a Hollywood, donde trabajó con algunos de los mejores directores. Entre lo más representativo de sus trabajos americanos destacan La reina de África (1951), de John Huston, La condesa descalza (1954), de Joseph Leo Mankiewicz, o Guerra y paz (1956), de King Vidor. Debutó como director con el thriller Intento de matar (1958). No obstante, su mayor éxito profesional le llegó con Hijos y Amantes (1960), una historia basada en la novela homónima de D. H. Lawrence e interpretada por Trevor Howard y Dean Stockwell. Estuvo nominada a siete Oscar, de los cuales obtuvo el de Mejor Fotografía en blanco y negro para el británico Freddie Francis. Jack Cardiff aspiraba al de Mejor Director, pero sólo consiguió el Globo de oro. Durante los años sesenta se dedicó casi exclusivamente a la dirección, y se convirtió en un solvente artesano en películas de acción como El liquidador (1965) o Último tren a Katanga (1967), para las cuales contó con el actor Rod Taylor, a quien había conocido durante el rodaje de El soñador rebelde (1964). Curiosamente, Cardiff se puso al frente de este último film como sustituto de John Ford, quien tuvo que abandonar el rodaje por problemas de salud. Tras una serie de producciones menores dentro y fuera de los Estados Unidos, Jack Cardiff regresó en los años setenta a la dirección de fotografía, labor en la que está considerado como uno de los grandes maestros de la historia del cine. En el año 2000 fue homenajeado por la Academia de las Artes y el Cine de Hollywood con un Oscar honorífico por su trayectoria, en honor a su destacada labor y contribución a la industria cinematográfica, convirtiéndose así en el único técnico en recibir tal distinción.
