A bord d'un avion en provenance de Colombie des ressortissants américains s'apprêtent à rentrer chez eux. Mais, en plein vol, un homme est attaqué par des millions de fourmis cannibales qui finissent par l'achever. Parmi les passagers figurent l'entomologiste Carrie Ross, et l'agent Ethan Hart qui font tout pour stopper cette invasion mortelle et éviter un massacre. Mais le gouvernement américain veut empêcher l'atterrissage de l'avion sur son sol. Les passagers s'en sortiront-ils vivants...
