Le Temps de l'innocence (1993)
New York, au XIXe siècle (1870). C'est en entrant dans la loge de sa fiancée, l'ingénue May Welland, que Newland Archer, un avocat très en vue, apprend le prochain retour aux États-Unis de la comtesse Ellen Olenska, une cousine de May à présent séparée de son mari, un aristocrate polonais. Au bal qui suit la représentation, Newland rencontre la comtesse. Frappé au cœur, il lui fait aussitôt envoyer des fleurs, cependant que May le presse d'avancer la date de leur mariage. Embarrassé, Newland est bien obligé de s'avouer qu'il est éperdument épris de la comtesse Olenska, alors même que sa famille l'a officiellement chargé de l'empêcher de divorcer…
