La Nouvelle-Orléans, à la fin du XIX° siècle. Orpheline élevée par une tante fortunée, la belle Barbara voit l'homme de sa vie partir pour l'Amérique du Sud. Quand il revient, il ramène avec lui Corinne, qu'il vient d'épouser. Barbara fera tout pour le reconquérir, et lui prouvera qu'elle est prête à tous les sacrifices quand le drame surviendra...
